Mashrabiya

In this monolithic, expressive house the traditional courtyard is inverted – instead of carving openings through a roof slab, the first floor slab is cut to form a double-height floating courtyard. This semi-indoor, tranquil volume is enveloped in mashrabiya screens inspired by the unique multi-directional patterns found in Jeddah, with an ever-changing interplay of light and shadow dancing on the walls.
